Special Needs Pets

One of Underdog Rescue's mission in rescuing adoptable dogs and cats is to commit to finding homes for those dogs and cats who have special needs.  This could mean that we have a cat who tested positive to feline leukemia, or a dog who lost a limb, but really it means that we find value in the animals that are looked over by many other rescue organizations.  The following animals are considered "special needs" because of their health or physical limitations.  Although not every home would be suitable, if you think you can open your home and heart to one of these truly deserving pets, visit our Applications page and complete the adoption application.

Special Needs Dogs

Apollo, 10-11 mths, Male, American Staffordshire Terrier/American Pit Bull Terrier mix

Disability: Missing Limb

Poor sweet Apollo was left at a vet clinic after he had mysteriously broken his front leg. His owners did not have the money for his vet care and had planned to euthanize him instead. Luckily, the employees at the vet clinic encouraged them to release ownership so that they could hopefully find a rescue group that would give Apollo a second chance. So far things have improved a lot for Apollo! While his leg was broken badly, involving the growth plate and was not healing well, Apollo didn't mind. He just wanted to play and be a normal 4 month old puppy. Our Vets determined that Apollo's leg would not heal normally with a splint. He was also not a good candidate for invasive surgical repair of his injured leg. Amputation was the best course of action to provide Apollo with a happy, pain-free life.

UPDATE:  Apollo is adjusting perfectly to life with 3 legs. He has healed and ready for adoption as of 2/1/08. In order to protect his remaining front leg from any injury, Apollo needs to either be the only dog, to go to a home with a smaller dog, or with a large, mellow, older dog.  Please show Apollo that no one will give up on him again!

UPDATE: Apollo is now 10 months old, and has been waiting for a home of his own for too long.  He is such a great guy, who really deserves a home he can call his own.  He has become such an easy going guy who just wants to belong to someone.  If that someone could be you, please complete an application and schedule an appointment to meet him.  You will not be disappointed!

Guinea, 1 year, Female, Boxer/Bull Terrier Mix

Disability: Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Guinea is quite a special little girl. We're not exactly sure what she's mixed with but we do know she is adorable! Little Guinea was born completely deaf. She is a happy girl, nonetheless who LOVES to play with other dogs. She will need to go to a home with another dog so she can feel fully secure. Guinea is shy at first but warms up & comes out of her shell in about 24 hours of being in a new environment. She is also good with cats. Guinea is about 1 year of age and weighs approximately 30 pounds. She is full grown.

Because Guinea can't hear, she would do best in a home without young children who might accidentally frighten her. She is currently living with a 7 & 10 year old kids, and really enjoys their attention.  Guinea also needs a home who have experience with obedience training, as deaf dogs must have strong leaders. Your efforts with her will not be wasted, as she is completely devoted and adoring of people.

McNiff, 9-10 mths, Male, Boxer/Pit Bull Mix

Disability: Missing Limb

McNiff loves everyone, even cats! He is about 9 months of age and is a very quiet boy. He is working hard on his house-training and is already well crate-trained. McNiff is new to rescue as of 3/1/08. Poor McNiff had a badly injured leg when we first met as a little stray puppy at the Pound. Hig leg was beyond repair and we had no choice but to have it amputated. He gets along on his 3 good legs like no body's business! You almost don't know it's missing! McNiff is great with kids & all other dogs. For more info, please call us at 952-929-0777.
